AQuA is delighted to announce that the Salford Care Homes Improvement Journey has been shortlisted for System or Commissioner Led Service Redesign Initiative at the HSJ Value Awards 2020, recognising their outstanding dedication to making things better in the NHS.

The judging panel comprised of a diverse range of highly regarded figures across the NHS and wider healthcare sector. To be shortlisted as a finalist for these awards, despite tough competition from hundreds of brilliant applicants, is a mark of real achievement for the partnership between Salford CCG, Salford Care Organisation, Salford Council, AQuA and Greater Manchester Mental Health (GMMH). The Safer Care Homes Improvement Journey has been selected based on their diligence, ambition and the positive impact that the project has had within their wider organisation.

The Salford Care Homes Improvement Journey was established by partners to create a targeted approach with home managers to improve the quality of life for care home residents. Over the 2 years, the project has seen a number of achievements including; reduction in A&E attendances and non-elective admissions, an improvement in staff confidence and engagement, improved CQC ratings and improved resident experience feedback.

Francine Thorpe, Director of Quality and Innovation at Salford CCG, said:

“I am delighted that partners in Salford have been shortlisted for this HSJ award in recognition of the improvement work that we have undertaken over the past two years with care homes across the city.  This has been a truly collaborative approach working with care home managers and their staff on a range of areas including nutrition, medicines safety, infection prevention and improving the experience of residents.

“Evidence of our improvement work includes a significant increase in the number of homes rated as ‘Good’ by the Care Quality Commission (CQC) from 38% in 2017 to 83% in 2020 which is the second best improvement in the country.  In addition to the improvements in CQC ratings we have also seen a reduction in A&E attendances and admissions to hospital for Salford care Home residents over this same period.

“Feedback from Care Homes managers about our approach to supporting their improvement journey has been hugely positive as we have created a culture of collaboration, co-operation and sharing of good practice.  We are very proud of the outcome of this work programme and the benefits realised for some of our most vulnerable citizens.”

HSJ editor Alastair McLellan comments:

“We would like to congratulate Salford CCG, Salford Care Organisation, Salford Council, AQuA and GMMH on being nominated in the category of System or Commissioner Led Service Redesign Initiative ahead of HSJ Value Awards 2020. We are looking forward to welcoming them to the ceremony in May, to join us in recognising the very best NHS teams and projects in the healthcare sector. This year’s finalists are of an outstanding calibre and all of them are exceptionally dedicated to enhancing healthcare across the UK.”

The winners will be selected following a rigorous, “live panel” judging stage ahead of the HSJ Value Awards 2020 awards ceremony. Held at Manchester Central on 21 May 2020, the evening will provide a great opportunity for influential figures to unite and celebrate the achievements of their industry peers. The awards evening is expected to be attended by leaders and professionals from within the NHS. This year’s chosen charity partner is MediCinema a charity dedicated to improving the wellbeing of patients, their families and carers across the UK through the magic of the shared cinema experience.
