“It was fantastic to connect with system leaders to explore how we can purposefully embed social value as a way of working across the system. I was particularly inspired by the discussions on listening and working with communities, and how we can use our networks and partnerships to make connections.” Jen Hopes, Programme Manager
Understanding Social ValueThe role of anchor institutions in driving community impact was a central theme. Learning how to make social value everyone’s responsibility is crucial for fostering a culture of inclusivity.

His insights on moving from anchor institutions to anchor systems was particularly thought-provoking – and how important it is to have courage.
Becky Jones, Social Value and Sustainability Specialist and MIAA Associate, highlighted that social value goes beyond procurement practices and it’s about understanding what services people need the most. By utilising the Social Value Charter and TOMs framework, organisations can demonstrate meaningful impact while addressing he needs of both communities and the planet.
Jen Hopes, Programme Manager at Aqua, stressed the importance of cultivating a social value mindset through collaboration across sectors. Aligning efforts with non-statutory organisations is vital for local and regional impact.
Dave Sweeney, Associate Director – Partnerships and Sustainability at NHS Cheshire and Merseyside Integrated Care Board, provided insights into managing priorities and leveraging data to capture impact. His encouragement to find allies who can drive change resonated with lots of our attendees and while it takes time, it’s important to make steps along the journey.
