After five years in the making, our new book: Appreciating Health and Care, was released on Tuesday 30 April!

We’re incredibly proud of our work and partnership with Health Innovation West Midlands and Appreciating People to create the book – which is the first resource of its kind. It brings together case studies on Appreciative Inquiry, Quality Improvement and Human Factors to demonstrate how positive change can be achieved, inspiring others to do the same.

About the book

The publication of Appreciating Health and Care gives health and care professionals from across the UK (and beyond) a resource full of positive and proactive change and transformation examples. We hope readers will be inspired by these examples, and encouraged to bring the learnings from this book into their own work.

The book explores a variety of themes and case studies including:

  1. An introduction to Appreciative Inquiry and the principles that create its philosophical underpinning.
  2. The emerging Appreciative Inquiry movement in healthcare, including information on Learning from Excellence, Civility Saves Lives and learning from mistakes and errors.
  3. Appreciative Inquiry in Action. This is divided into eight themes, with two case studies on each.
  4. Further resources and activities.

We’d like to give a big thank you to the authors of the book, without whom none of this would be possible:

  • Brook Howells, Human Factors Consultant, Systemantics, and former Senior Improvement Advisor, Aqua
  • Daniel Hodgkiss, Assistant Programme Manager, Health Innovation West Midlands
  • Kayleigh Barnett, Head of Continuous Improvement, Wrightington, Wigan and Leigh NHS Foundation Trust, and former Senior Improvement Lead at Aqua.
  • Suzanne Quinney, Co-Director, Appreciating People
  • Tim Slack, Founder and Co-Director, Appreciating People
